World of Warcraft: Forever - Name Reservation

Upon starting up the Battle.net launcher this evening, I was confronted by a message stating that I needed to uninstall the Beta version of World of Warcraft: Forever, now that the testing had finished. So I clicked on the icon and off it went. I didn’t spend as much time in the Beta test as I would’ve liked but certainly enjoyed what I did. I familiarised myself with the UI and controls and endeavoured to get a feel for the way the game handles. I tried three classes during this Beta. Hunter, Warlock and Warrior. However, I haven’t spent enough time with each class to make any sort of decision as to which one will become my main. Having no history with WoW is in some respects a bonus, because I have no inherent prejudices and I am completely oblivious as to the prevailing game meta. I made sure that my research did not overwhelm me with information as this game is very much a dream for spreadsheet aficionados.

After uninstalling the Beta version of WoW Forever, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the final release of the game client could be installed in advance of the November the 4th launch date. Blizzard have always been very efficient when it comes to pre-loading content. So I duly did this, noting that the total installation size is currently 48GB. No doubt this will grow. It then occurred to me that there may be the possibility of creating your alts in advance and reserving their respective names. Again, if memory serves, this is something that is often available. So I recreated the three alts that I had made for the Beta and was able to secure their names. I’m not exactly sure why but I feel that an alts name is very important in an MMORPG. I think it is something that shows that some time, effort and thought has been put into the creation of the character. Or may be its just performative creativity? Who Knows.

It turns out that I was very fortunate, firstly because you can only reserve a maximum of three names in advance any way, which I did not know. Secondly, there have been issues with other European players creating alts. They’re apparently unable to save them. I guess I was just in the right place at the right time but only through pure chance. Hopefully this glitch will be addressed shortly or it may simply be down to the sheer number of players trying to do the same thing at the same time. As for me, I’m now good to go. I have three characters from classes I have a modicum of experience with and that I will play on launch day, rather than immediately starting something new. I suspect the server queues and game lag will be high on 4th November, so I’m not expecting anything other than the excitement of being online when a new MMORPG launches. It’s been a while since something like this has happened.
