LOTRO and DLSS 5

Two years ago I wrote a post about fine tuning your graphics in the MMORPG The Lord of the Rings Online. Apart from installing ReShade and using AMD Adrenalin, the options were somewhat limited, due to the game’s age and multiplayer status. Since then, I’ve been playing LOTRO with the game settings maxed out, a custom ReShade profile to make the colour palette more vivid and Radeon Image Sharpening enabled within the AMD software. The game looks clear, crisp and the draw distance is pretty good for an ageing game but I still wish the graphics could be tweaked further. Hence, I’ve been trawling the internet in a vain attempt to see if I can find any third party utilities that could be used to enhance LOTRO further. During the course of my search I stumbled across DLSS 5 Manager. This is an open-source, intelligent utility and one-click mod installer designed to inject and manage Nvidia's DLSS 5 neural rendering features, ReShade, and OptiScaler into PC games.

For those unfamiliar with Nvidia DLSS 5 it is an AI-powered tool that acts like a live, high-end visual filter for video games, painting ultra-realistic lighting, shadows, and material details on top of the game as you play. The process uses neural rendering utilising artificial intelligence to actively rewrite and upgrade how light hits surfaces, skin, and hair in real time, making standard game graphics look closer to movie CGI. There are plenty of videos on YouTube showing DLSS 5 being applied to both old and new games. Often the results can vary and the software is not as transformative as some would have you believe, especially with older titles. That being said, I thought it would be interesting to see if this sort of technology could be applied to LOTRO, so I gave it a go.

After downloading DLSS 5 Manager from GitHub I discovered that the software, despite having a nicely designed GUI, had no “read me” file or instructions. Hence I had to watch several more YouTube videos and use ChatGPT to familiarise myself with its use. The software by default scans your PC for installed games and it picked up all those that I play via Steam, GoG and other launchers. I had to manually add LOTRO. The GUI allows you to select which API the game uses, such as DirectX 11 or Vulkan. You then choose which additional services you wish to add to the game to enhance it. Upon launch, you then press the relevant hotkeys to bring up the DLSS 5 Manager interface, which allows you to toggle on and off the features you’ve added. The software notes exactly what has been added to the game so if there are any issues you can cleanly remove everything and return to the prior build.

DLSS 5 Manager frequently uses ReShade as an interface within the selected game. It detected that I had this already installed and skipped that part of the process when I applied the software to LOTRO. Upon launch, I could bring up the ReShade console and initially everything seemed fine. However when I pressed Shift + o to bring up the DLSS 5 Manager interface, nothing happned. After some searching I discovered an error message in the ReShade Addon tab. ReShade detected LOTRO's network activity and disabled all ReShade add-ons to prevent any “exploitation”. This safety feature designed to prevent cheating disabled the DLSS 5 addons in case they were game cheats. I next uninstalled the standalone version of ReShade and installed the version with full addon support. Unfortunately the new install of ReShade and DLSS5 caused LOTRO to crash at launch. I therefore rolled back the changes, reinstalled the standalone version of ReShade and removed the DLSS 5 files from LOTRO.

Upon reflection, pursuing the use of DLSS 5 in a game such as LOTRO does seem somewhat optimistsic. However, it highlights that there is a gap in the market with regard to enhancement tools. Players such as myself are not looking for “better anti-aliasing” or “a sharper image”. Rather we would like a replacement or augmentation of the old renderer, so that ageing games get substantially better lighting, materials, shadows and textures without the developers having to rebuild it. There are tools that do this, but unfortunately they are tied to particular generations of game engines. RTX Remix is the closest thing to the sotware I have in mind. It can replace textures and materials, add path-traced lighting and DLSS and effectively remaster a game externally. The problem is that NVIDIA designed it principally for earlier versions of DirectX and single player games. LOTRO uses DirectX 11. Plus I have an AMD GPU.

At present, I believe I have reached the limit of the tweaks I can apply to LOTRO with my current AMD Radeon RX 6650 XT (8 GB) GPU. The frustrating thing is that my proposed tool is theoretically possible. Something between ReShade and RTX Remix, that is able to intercept a DX11 game’s renderer, upscale or replace the textures, reinterpret materials and improve lighting without requiring direct support from the game. So in conclusion, this DLSS 5 experiment has not been a total write off. I’ve learned that it not a question of adding modern reconstruction technology to improve LOTRO. The issue is the ageing assets and renderer. If these can be addressed at all, then improvements can be made.
