Project Questa Logo Alt.

Thursday 29th October was a milestone for Project Questa. I completed the core build for the utility after copious testing. Over the last week several issues have come to light over such things as the size of the quest bestowal window, OCR mistaking punctuation for text and voice latency during narration. All of which have now been resolved to a degree that is acceptable. During the course of solving these problems a lot of ideas and considerations have emerged and as a result, I think it best to set out an overall scope of work for Questa. This is to avoid mission creep and to set out clearly what Questa will and will not offer. Furthermore this list is now effectively closed, so I have a clear path set before me. It is also worth noting that as this is a “one man band” project, I reserve the right to pack it all in, if circumstances dictate. I don’t plan to do so at present but life can play wild cards from time to time.

Questa: Narrator Mode (Core product)

Reads quest dialogue in LOTRO using an updatable database derived from the game client.
OCR fallback is available as a secondary means of narration.
A single Kokoro narrator voice can be chosen from 8 presets (This voice narrates everything, regardless of which NPC is speaking).
A custom dictionary is included allowing corrections to pronunciation and troublesome words.
Narration volume can be adjusted independently of LOTRO audio settings.
Questa: Narrator Mode is a complete, stand-alone product.

Questa: Character Mode

Includes everything from Narrator Mode.
Adds dynamically selected voices from a library of 8, according to the NPC's identity, race and gender.
This is an optional enhancement built upon Narrator Mode. Currently under development.

Questa: Performance Mode

Includes everything from Narrator and Character Mode
Uses carefully produced, pre-recorded dialogue with individually curated voices and performances.
This is another optional enhancement built upon Narrator and Character Mode.
Downloadable dialogue packs will be available, potentially organised by expansion. Currently under development.

Project Questa is designed to be wholly independent to LOTRO, so that it doesn’t breach any terms of service. It uses several open source libraries which are run via python script. It is intended for use on Windows 11 PCs and at present there are no plans to port it to other operating systems. Similarly, the utility is intend for use with English dialogue installations of LOTRO. The source code for Questa will shortly be available via GitHub where others can customise it as they see fit. Questa is a community resource for LOTRO players, although the basic build could be used on other games that have text dialogue windows. No doubt future bugs will emerge. These will be investigated and addressed but individual user support will not be available.

Now for the tricky part. What are the hardware requirements to run Questa? Well I should start with the specifications of my PC on which the utility has been developed. It has a AMD Ryzen 7 5700X 8-Core Processor (3.40 GHz), an AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT 16 GB (previously a RX 6650 XT 8GB) and 32.0GB of DDR4 SDRAMM. I am currently testing on my laptop which has significantly lower specifications but as this is still work in progress, I will not yet commit to minimum specifications. I think a line in the sand will have to be drawn mainly due to the TTS service which can be quite demanding. I appreciate that some LOTRO players have older PCs, judging by the screenshots I see online and those users may well be the ones that are most interested by Questa. I will therefore keep everyone appraised when I have more data.

Finally, let me address the matter of when Project Questa will be available. By default I feel disposed towards the Gandalf defence, in so far that Questa will arrive “precisely when it means to”. However, that does seems a little unfair. So I will go as far as to say that I hope to have something on GitHub that others can access by the end of December. Beyond that, it very much a case of how long is a piece of string. Right, back to the grind stone. Project Questa isn’t going to finish itself is it?
