A Year in Blogging
I did not manage to maintain my writing schedule this year and have not posted everyday as I would’ve liked. I have produced over two hundred and seventy posts but still feel I could have done more. Blaugust was a welcome burst of enthusiasm that I managed to sustain for September and October, but I lost momentum in the run up to Christmas. At least I know what the root cause is which puts me a step nearer to resolving it. Having written several posts in the past about “writers block” and the other perennial excuse of not having anything to write about, I seem to have squarely fallen into both those traps. At present I find that motivating myself is the key problem. If I haven’t started writing something by midday, then it more than often gets left for the day. If I intend to escape this malaise, then I shall have to establish a far stricter writing schedule for 2019 and endeavour to do my writing first thing in the morning, when I am most focused.

However, despite the reduction in output, I have enjoyed writing this year. I feel that my style and content continues to improve. The Blaugust writing event was a great way to discover several new blogs and it is heartening to see many of the participants are still producing regular posts. However, the ongoing decline of long-form writing is still evident online. Many still see Twitch TV and You Tube as the easiest means to establish an online presence and gain an audience. This is especially true with respect to gaming and its associated fandom. There are good streamers out there that frequently produce quality output, but it seems to become increasingly harder to find them among all the competing white noise. I still maintain that the written word is a subtler and more flexible medium for self-expression and discourse so I’ll continue to advocate for it. Perhaps further planned writing events in 2019 that encourage and nurture potential bloggers, would be beneficial.
It has also been pleasing to see a growth in website traffic over the last twelve months. Contains Moderate Peril seems to be increasing it reach globally as the stats show that a third of the traffic now comes from outside of Europe and the US. Google also brings a lot of readers to the site. The film reviews are a major contributor to this, as they are not as transient as some of the gaming posts. 2018 has once again shown that referrals via social media are not as important as one would surmise, unless you have hundreds of thousands of followers. My tweets promoting new posts do attract some traffic but not as much as a link from a fellow blogger or mainstream website such as Massively Overpowered. The statistical analysis also shows that due to the international nature of its audience, Contains Moderate Peril sees the most traffic between 11:00 PM and 3:00 AM GMT.
The posts that received the most views this year are once again a rather eclectic mix. My thoughts on a proposed Silmarillion movie adaptation that I wrote back in May 2017 proved the most popular. Similarly, my short return to The Elder Scrolls Online led to two posts that have gained substantial traction. Alik’r Desert Dolmen Farming and Levelling and Gear Progression in ESO were the second and third most read posts. The fourth article which continues to garner a regular amount of traffic is a review for a fan edit of the iconic George Romero movie, Dawn of the Dead. As this version is a reconstruction of the original work print it is a subject of interest among movie fans. And the fifth most read blog post of 2018 were my initial thoughts on Update 23 for LOTRO, which I wrote when it became available on the Bullroarer Test Server. In fact, posts about The Lord of the Rings Online tend to gain traction, especially in recent months as the MMORPG has enjoyed a renaissance among both old and new players.
I’d like to thank all those who have continued to support Contains Moderate Peril over the last twelve months by reading posts and linking to my work. As a writer it is rewarding to know that one’s content is enjoyed and well received. 2018 was certainly the year that I made peace with “the death of website comments”. It seems to be something that people no longer feel disposed towards. Feedback usually comes directly from the links I post on social media, so I guess it’s not so much a loss of reader input, but merely a change in the means of providing it. I shall naturally continue to write as often as I can in 2019 and will more than likely motivate myself to ensure that January is at least well represented. I shall also continue my “Thoughts on Blogging” series of posts and continue to encourage others to do so. I also look forward to reading my fellow bloggers content over the year ahead. May they all be prolific.
A Year in Movies
Throughout my adult life I have always gone to the cinema as a leisure activity. 2018 has been of note in this regard as it’s the year I’ve been to the cinema the least. I have visited my local multiplex just three times over the last twelve months. It’s not that good quality movies are not made anymore. Far from it. It’s just that they don’t always get released theatrically. Furthermore, the cost to entertainment ratio has simply become too much of a gamble. Standard tickets are priced between £12 to £15 locally and I resent such an outlay for a film that may only be adequate or worse. Perhaps my outlook on pricing is unreasonable but I am not going to pay such money for mediocre entertainment. I don’t expect every movie I see to be a cinematic milestone or genre classic but nor do I expect it to be an exercise in indifference. If I had paid such ticket prices to see The Predator or Death Wish at my local Cineworld, then I would have been singularly annoyed. Mercifully I saw them both at home and therefore at a much lower cost.

2018 has been another year of ongoing change for the movie industry. Netflix continues to release films from established directors that have been made exclusively for their own platform. Two of these of note were Mute directed Duncan Jones and Outlaw King by David Mackenzie. Some of these movies had nominal theatrical releases to raise their profile or possibly to meet the criteria for the various cinematic awards that are bestowed in spring 2019. Just prior to Christmas Netflix released Bird Box directed by Susanne Bier. Apparently, the video on demand service offers very lucrative terms to directors and a degree of creative freedom that is not always available when working with traditional film studios. There is also a more measured and open-minded approach to ideas from Netflix, allowing film makers to pursue more bespoke and niche market products.
Netflix has also become a convenient outlet for studios that have films that they wish to "offload" or have lost commercial faith in. For example, Alex Garland's Annihilation received a limited US release which generated low box office returns. Hence the film was then sold to Netflix rather than released theatrically to the rest of the world. Warner Bros. also sold Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle straight to Netflix, bypassing any kind of theatrical release. Make of that what you will. There also continues to be an ongoing debate about whether Netflix movie needs to have a cinema release to be able to compete with commercially released movies for awards. Such arguments are often driven by passions, adherence to established culture and dare I say a little snobbery. Whatever side of the debate you are on, the way we consume movies is changing and the day of the simultaneous cross platform release is not far off.
Mainstream cinema continued to be dominated by big budget, CGI driven spectacles in 2018. Such movies are frequently filled with action but often woefully lacking in plot, in-depth characters and dramatic impact. The Meg was one of the few examples of a big dumb movie that was fun. Sadly, Skyscraper was just a movie that was big and very, very stupid. Not even Dwayne Johnson’s charisma could save this one. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom offered the viewing public yet more dinosaurs and during its second act a distinctly gothic take. Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One adaptation was a mixed bag which struggled to make it’s mark under the weight of its myriad pop culture references and homages. The Marvel Cinematic Universe lumbered on at the box office with Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War finding both critical and commercial success. Sadly, my interest in this genre expired several years ago
2018 was certainly a good year for horror movies. Some ill-informed journalists proclaimed that the genre was back, overlooking the fact that movies of this ilk have been cleaning up at the box office habitually for the last two decades. There was a lot of buzz and hyperbole over Hereditary. It is a good movie but far from the genre milestone that some have claimed. A Quiet Place proved to be a solid all-round hit with robust central performances from Emily Blunt and John Krasinski (who also wrote and directed the movie). Unfriended: The Dark Web took the “screen life” genre further forward, proving it to be an interesting medium if intelligently done. However, like the “found footage” format, it may quickly suffer from fatigue if utilised too often. Two other notable horror movies released in 2018 were Halloween and Ghost Stories. The former being a direct sequel to John Carpenter’s original movie and the latter being a film adaptation of Andy Nyman and Jeremy Dyson's stage play. Both were well made, skilfully executed and entertaining.
The traditional action genre was not so well represented in 2018. Major studios remain ambivalent towards ratings higher than PG-13. Hence, The Commuter, a mystery thriller set on a train, focused more upon the convoluted plot rather than violence. It’s all a bit silly and farfetched but broadly saved by his towering presence and soft Irish tones of Liam Neeson. The latest Tomb Raider adaptation starring Alicia Vikander did not find favour with the critics. However, it was competently made and captured the tone of the rebooted games well. Its biggest flaw was not doing anything with its main villain played by Walton Goggins but it had a lot more style and depth than your average super hero movie with which it was competing. I was also greatly surprised by the critical indifference that met The Equalizer 2. It was a well written sequel that still focused on the character of Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) and his struggles. The acting was top notch and there were some finely crafted visceral action scenes. Seldom does the action genre get this cerebral.
I watched the lion’s share of the movies I saw in 2018 at home. It’s something that I have grown use to now and I only like going to the cinema these days if it is at the British Film Institute or somewhere similar. In these instances, the audience are dedicated film fans and thus well behaved throughout the proceedings. I have also grown use to watching movies in 1080p and am somewhat discombobulated when I find myself having to watch a film in standard definition out of necessity. 2019 is also likely to be the year that our household upgrades to 4K, which means replacing the existing TV and Blu-ray player. It will also be interesting to see if the gap between theatrical and home media/VOD release dates get’s any shorter. It currently appears to be between two and three months. As mentioned earlier I believe simultaneous release across all platforms will not be far off. One thing I’m certain off, there will still be plenty of quality films released in 2019. It’s just that the discerning viewer will have to look across an increasing spectrum of platforms to find them.
A Year in Social Media
The term social media is a broad church. For me it primarily means Twitter as that is the only platform of that ilk that I use regularly. I maintain a presence on Facebook simply to stay in touch with friends who have emigrated to the US. We have a private page where we catch up instead of using the traditional medium of emails. It is more immediate but also more frivolous. If it weren’t for need that it serves, I would have long closed my Facebook account. 2018 was also the year where I tried to continue using Instagram but failed. I don’t tend to catalogue and display my life in the manner that this medium tends to demand and use it mainly to see what my granddaughters have been up to. For me Twitter is the social media platform I feel most comfortable using and feel that I have mastered. I use it to promote my writing and for quips, banter and social interaction. Beyond that I think its benefits are both limited and even questionable.

Initially I thought that having a large Twitter following would be invaluable for promoting my writing and podcast. Ten years later I have definitively concluded that it is not so. Yes, I do generate traffic from my tweets but it’s less than a quarter of all visits to my blog. You also very quickly learn that informed debate is also an impossibility on this platform. Muting specific keywords, blocking people and generally pruning the list of accounts that you follow is the key to happiness and success when using this Twitter. You are not obliged to debate and discuss with all and sundry who see fit to question you. Twitter is not a moderated, civilised arena for intellectual discussion. It is more akin to a hectoring at a sporting venue. Treat Twitter like your own front door. You don’t have to open it, especially if an itinerant asshole or professional malcontent is knocking.
On a more serious note, as you get older (or at least I find so), friends and colleagues tend to settle down, have families and do the “usual” things in life. Social circles therefore contract and alter. This is perfectly natural and nothing out of the ordinary. Over the last ten years, I have come to know a broad and diverse group of people via Twitter. They hail from all walks of life and from numerous countries. I greatly value their company and daily thoughts. I consider this to be the real benefit that Twitter brings, as the virtual company of my colleagues has often helped me through some bleak periods. The debate over the validity of online friendships still rages on but I genuinely believe that is can be just as important as those offline. I would happily meet up with all my Twitter chums and enjoy their company over a meal. Hopefully these positive benefits of social media will continue into 2019.
A Year in Technology
My relationship with technology has changed over the years and my enthusiasm has tempered greatly. Having worked in the IT field for 25 years (up until 2016), I have been immersed in technological advancement and due to my age have seen a great deal change. I was at one time an early adopter of anything I considered to be potentially beneficial to me and at times have been guilty of acquiring something “new and shiny” simply for its own sake. I have even flirted with that dubious notion of tech as a fashion accessory. But sometimes age does bring wisdom, so nowadays, I’m a firm believer in finding the sweet spot between “the right tool for the job” and “if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it”. Subsequently, 2018 has not seem me acquire a great deal of new technology. However, what I have bought this year or started using has been well received and useful.

I managed to keep my ageing PC adequately performing for another 12 months, although I’m pretty sure that everything that can be improved, has been. This year I finally added an SSD as the existing hybrid drive just wasn’t cutting it. Naturally Windows 10 is now performing significantly better and has a much-improved boot up time. The clean installation I carried out has meant that a lot of games are no longer installed and those that are benefit from being on the SSD. At present this is just limited to LOTRO and STO. Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, which I recently bought in a sale, has been placed on a secondary traditional hard drive due to its large size. This new game performs well but I cannot max out the settings, as I did with titles three or four years ago. I think 2019 will see me purchase a new PC but for the present my four-year-old system continues to serve well. However, that is mainly due to a memory upgrade, replacement graphics card and now solid-state drive.
I don’t know about you, but I get through a lot of keyboards and mice. I replace them both at least once a year and sometimes even twice. Keys tend to lose their markings and those that are used the most IE vowels, spacebar and backspace will become less responsive as their mechanism wears out. Similarly, I find that mice lose their left click quickly and that the perspiration from my hands eats through the plastic case. Both of these issues can be remedied by purchasing high quality replacements, but I tend to just buy a standard Microsoft keyboard from the supermarket along with whatever gaming mouse is being discounted. I bought a Trust CXT 105 mouse earlier this year which has the “added novelty” of changing colour. It does however have a fabric covered cable to prevent tangles which does appear to work quite well.
I recently wrote about buying a new tablet and how I eventually opted for the Fire HD 10. Some people don’t care for the device due to the pervasive way the Amazon ecosystem is integrated into the GUI. However, it has zero impact upon the consumption of content and I can read books, comics and watch videos in comfort and on a surprisingly good quality full HD 10-inch screen. 2018 also saw further improvements upon that other Amazon flagship products, the Echo. I originally purchased the first generation “smart speaker” back in November 2016. It continues to be regularly used in our household for news, music and internet enquiries as well as timers and alarms. This is also the third year I have been an Amazon Prime customer and once again, I have reaped the benefits of the subscription. I purchase not only for myself but for other members of my family. Subsequently I have a very eclectic purchasing history that often leads to some curious suggestions.
I acquired a new phone late in 2017 so have now had my Samsung Galaxy S8 over a year. I recently noticed some burn in on the screen so have moved icons and changed background to try and minimise any further problems of this kind. I have endeavoured to not be one of those people who is continuously on my smartphone and I’ve successfully imposed a set of rules to ensure that it is not used all the time, especially in social situations. I have removed a lot of superfluous apps this year focusing on those that seem to access my contacts and location for no valid reason. I have managed to not use Uber Eats excessively although it does make ordering unhealthy food on a whim and having it delivered to your door worryingly too easy. If they ever bring out a similar app for gin, then I may be doomed. The Taxi Card service that allows me to reliably book black cabs at a discounted rate for my disabled parents has been invaluable.
Technology is everywhere and permeates so many aspects of our lives. I order medical supplies for my father online and have an app on my phone that shows me what carers have visited him in the morning and evening and what actions they have taken with regard to his wellbeing. I can email my local pharmacist with prescription requests and have them delivered if required. The internet age certainly has benefits when managing my parents’ affairs. However, as a household we still choose to grocery shop at the actual supermarket, rather than shop exclusively online. And although apps, hardware and web-based services bring a great deal of convenience, they do not provide the social element that traditional face to face transactions bring. Therefore, I continue to try and maintain a healthy balance between the two. I also remain sceptical of so called “free” services that continue to harvest our personal data. Overall, I still think that my life has benefitted by the technology and services that it provides. It remains to be seen whether this equitable balance continues into 2019.
Goodbye 2017
Frankly, I won’t be sorry to see the back of 2017. Personally, it was a very difficult year for my family. I won’t bore you with details but to say that it has been trying is an understatement. Then of course there have been wider issues to consider. Politically, socially and economically the UK is currently very divided. Fear and anger seem to drive and dominate all debate and public discourse. Furthermore, there doesn’t seem to be a cure to these issues on the immediate horizon. So, I don’t think 2018 is going to be a radical improvement with regard to these matters. However, despite there being much beyond our control, we can always look to ourselves to improve things for those we love and our own immediate situation.

So, I’ll be posting a list of plans and projects tomorrow because I think it’s important to set goals and targets. It can end up being the one thing that you do get to control and manage effectively, compared to the fluid nature of day-to-day life. Plus, I have a rather old school attitude toward the concept of continuous self-improvement. I like to learn new skills. So overall, I’m hoping I can be emotionally self-sufficient in 2018 and not get weighed down by tabloid hysteria and bandwagon jumping politics. Just focus on the task in-hand and stay content.

2017 didn’t quite go to plan with regard to my personal podcast output. Brian and I decided to stop producing the Burton & Scrooge Podcast and return to creating material under the Contains Moderate Peril brand. This was a good idea in so far as consolidation, but it was ill timed as both of us were somewhat fatigued with podcasting per se. Ultimately Brian decided to take a break and pursue some projects of his own. I decided to push on with podcasting in my usual idiom and I was pleased with the three new shows that were produced. Sean, Brax, Jaedia and Wolfy were extremely obliging and great guests, but ultimately my schedule just couldn’t sustain a regular show. Hence, I re-released some “classic” shows to fill the gaps in the run up to Christmas. As a result of all these changes and the delays, the overall numbers for the show have been disappointing. Although statistics are not the only reason why I podcast, they are important as I was hoping to grow the audience this year. That has patently not happened although it is nice to know there’s a loyal core group of listeners. Therefore, I now have to think long and hard about my podcasting plans for 2018.

Although I’ve enjoyed many of the topics that have been regularly discussed on the Contains Moderate Peril podcast, I find myself tiring of the failings of the game industry and the iniquities of many of its fans. However, my passion for movies and the cinema per se is still strong and it’s a subject I would like to pursue at some depth. Sadly, I have yet to find someone who would like to co-host such a show, so the alternative is to produce a solo podcast. This requires writing a detailed script for each episode, which is time consuming and complex. Such a format would then have to be a monthly undertaking to allow the time to produce it. After some experimentation and due consideration, I don’t think I can accommodate such a project in conjunction with my regular blogging and the book I’ve decided to complete. I suspect that I may have to take a sabbatical from podcasting in 2018, which is frustrating to say the least.
Thankfully, many of my friends and colleagues have not been stymied by their production schedules and have continued to produce regular good quality show throughout the course of the year. Pixels & Dice, Aggro Chat and Battle Bards, as well as How is the Movie? remain the backbone of The Gaming and Entertainment Network. Outside of our own collective it’s been an exceptionally good year for the Geek to Geek Podcast. Hosts Void and Beej have consistently covered a broad range of subjects and are happy to differ in opinion on many of them. Their enthusiasm and dedication has been constant over the last twelve months. Mike Muncer’s Evolution of Horror was another great discovery this year and has proven to be fun, engaging and extremely knowledgeable about its subject. I’d also like to congratulate Will Ross and Mike Taylor who continue to explore quality literary horror in their aptly named A Podcast to the Curious. Despite there being a perceived dumbing down in other media, many podcasts still maintain extremely high standards. In many respects we are spoilt for choice at present as the medium really does seem to have come into its own. Therefore, I am confident that 2018 will be a good year of quality shows and entertaining content.
A Year in Blogging
My blogging goal for 2017 was to write a post every day. Due to family illness, I’ve missed approximately 10 days during the course of the year, however considering the circumstances I feel I have done well to maintain such a schedule. Compared to 2016 which saw the website decline and even go offline for a while, 2017 has been far more productive. Traffic has increased, and I feel that Contains Moderate Peril is finding an audience once again, as it did during it’s heyday in 2014. Broadening the scope of subjects that I write about has proven a sound decision and one I would recommend to other bloggers. It certainly allows for greater freedom of expression and technically, if nothing is off the table, then there’s always something to write about. Subsequently, I can see from my website statistics that the readership is becoming increasingly diverse and global in nature. As a writer, I therefore feel that it has been a successful year and I am satisfied with what has been achieved. My writing process has improved, and I can order my thoughts and structure a blog post far quicker than I use to.

Due to family illness, I’ve missed approximately 10 days during the course of the year, however considering the circumstances I feel I have done well to maintain such a schedule. Compared to 2016 which saw the website decline and even go offline for a while, 2017 has been far more productive. Traffic has increased, and I feel that Contains Moderate Peril is finding an audience once again, as it did during it’s heyday in 2014. Broadening the scope of subjects that I write about has proven a sound decision and one I would recommend to other bloggers. It certainly allows for greater freedom of expression and technically, if nothing is off the table, then there’s always something to write about. Subsequently, I can see from my website statistics that the readership is becoming increasingly diverse and global in nature. As a writer, I therefore feel that it has been a successful year and I am satisfied with what has been achieved. My writing process has improved, and I can order my thoughts and structure a blog post far quicker than I use to.
Outside of my own writing, there are still many fellow bloggers who continue to write on a regular basis, sharing their thoughts and expressing their views. I try to read as broad a spectrum of writing styles and opinions as possible, as this is not only entertaining but can often provide an invaluable source of material to reply to or debate. I also follow one blog whose author’s world view is the complete opposite of mine. This is mainly to see how others think, irrespective of whether their views have been formed through analysis or critical thinking. Again, it can provide some interesting prompts for writing. Furthermore, as my gaming horizon inevitably contracts many of the blogs I follow, keep me informed about games I no longer play or aspects of the industry that I no longer focus upon. Then there are a few that I read just because I enjoy the author’s writing style or personality. Gaming can become awfully serious at times. I like those writers that still remember it’s also about having fun.
Sadly, there were some bloggers that decided to hang up their spurs this year. Real life demands, and pressures are usually the main reason for this. However, for some writers, there were less pleasant factors that led to their decision. Negative comments, abuse or the sheer blinkered zealotry of certain fans can certainly erode one’s pleasure in writing. Misogyny and prejudice still abound online, and the current political climate seems to have emboldened certain parties. Then there is the matter of blog post comments per se, which are few and far between these days. I have given up trying to encourage them. What responses I do get to my writing are often via Twitter. This situation just seems to reflect the changing nature of online social interaction. And it would also be remiss of me if I didn’t mention how I miss writing based online events such as the Newbie Blogger Initiative and Blaugust. Perhaps we will see someone else pick up the baton in the next twelve months and arrange something.
I intend to keep blogging in 2018 but it will be less frequent. I haven’t decided on my new schedule as of yet, but it will no longer be daily. I have a non-fiction book that remains unwritten, despite a great deal of preliminary work and planning. This will be my primary writing focus in the months ahead. I have a clear timetable and an end date that I wish to achieve. Perhaps I can blog about the process of writing something more substantial than a blog post? We shall see. In the meantime, I’d like to thank everyone who has visited Contains Moderate Peril in 2017 and helped make it such a good year. If you are thinking about writing in 2018 I would certainly encourage you to do so and stick with it. Google loves a website that posts new content regularly. Writing is also a very rewarding pastime and a great way to improve your written and analytical skills. We also need more rational and measured voices contributing to our online community.
A Year in Movies
I have always enjoyed the experience of going to the cinema and I still consider it a great night out. Watching an engaging film with good company and then discussing it afterwards over drinks or a meal is one of life’s great pleasures. Sadly, over the course of 2017 I’ve only gone to see a movie at my local multiplex three times. This has nothing to do with audience behaviour or the standard of my local cinema. Both are surprisingly good. This is all down to the films that dominated cinemas at present. Although I have no major axe to grind with the fantasy genre, I do not wish an exclusive cinematic diet of such material. I have seen sufficient Super Hero movies for the present and have become tired with high concept, blockbuster, CGI driven actionfests. It concerns me that viewers who predominantly watch such movies are missing out on a wealth or broader material that could expand their tastes and horizons. I could also argue that mainstream cinema is becoming increasingly infantilised but perhaps that is best left for another blog post.

A ticket at my local cinema costs between £9 and £12. Prices vary often according to the movie and its distributor. I paid several pounds more than usual when seeing Star Wars: The Last Jedi for example. There is also the additional cost of travel as well as food and drink to be considered. So, it is not unusual for me to spend £25 even if I just go on my own. Although this is not an exorbitant sum, I do think long and hard about whether the film being seen will be sufficiently entertaining, before committing to buying tickets. All too often the movies do not inspire or enthuse me enough to justify a visit. Furthermore, the gap between a movies theatrical release and its availability for home viewing, seems to be getting shorter and shorter. Blade Runner 2049 was shown in theatres from October 6th. It became available on iTunes on December 26th, less than two months later. Furthermore, some titles if they perform poorly in certain regions will subsequently bypass the cinemas elsewhere and go directly to streaming services. This also happens for films that have faired well at the box office. Sometimes services such as Netflix or Amazon Prime will pay a premium to have access to certain titles early. I was surprised to find The Foreigner starring Jackie Chan appear on UK Netflix from December 15th.
So, bearing all the aforementioned points in mind, I have managed to select three movies I feel are good examples of quality film making in 2017. Of this three, the first one I saw in the cinema upon its release. The other two I saw via VOD. First off, there was Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk. A minimalist (in so far as dialogue) retelling of the Dunkirk evacuation of 1940, narratively framed within three simple, yet absorbing tales of heroism. An Intelligent and thought-provoking piece of cinema without any nationalist or political posturing, although some tried to erroneously couch it in those terms. Next was Edgar Wright’s old school action thriller Baby Driver. This is a film that works well on multiple levels. It is a wonderful homage to sixties and seventies heist movies. It also a well-crafted thriller and human drama. It has great performances, prefect editing and pacing with an eclectic yet innovative score. Finally, I was surprised and immensely impressed by Vince Vaughn’s performance in Brawl in Cell Block 99. Directed by Craig Zahler (Bone Tomahawk), this character driven drama about a prisoner who is forced to extremes to protect his family and settle a debt, features worryingly credible fights, all framed and edited in a style that flies in the face of the contemporary cinematic aesthetic. Yet it is still the story and acting that dominate the proceedings.
Setting aside the issue of the respective quality of mainstream Hollywood film making, there is another issue that has reached a head in 2017. Professional movie criticism has found itself increasingly at odds with fandom. Furthermore, fandom has become more adversarial in its relationship with film makers. The subtlety and nuance of a well-considered review, written by a cinematically literate critic, has been eclipsed by the arbitrary and two-dimensional nature of review aggregation websites such as Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes. Distilling a movie into just a mark out of five is not exactly good for engendering balanced and broad cinematic appreciation. Also, such aggregation services can be manipulated to make “a point”. Furthermore, the recent fan furore over Star Wars: The Last Jedi shows that for many viewers, their relationship with film is inherently different from others. They see big movie franchises as vehicles for fan service; things to be crafted to their specific desires. The notion of cinema as art and as such being subject to the vision and whims of its makers, does not sit well with them. This perspective has odd parallels with that erroneous crowdfunding mindset and the misguided notion that simply because you like and financially support something it somehow guarantees creative input. Fandom may well end up being a contributory factor to the death of the blockbuster franchise movie.
It is customary to make prediction regarding the forthcoming year. The only one I feel confident in making is that I shall probably go to the cinema less in 2018. Despite some high-profile failures, the main studios seem to still have nothing but sequels, reboots and big budget tentpole releases lined up for the next twelve months. Thankfully, there is a healthy market for older, obscure and cult movies on home media and streaming. Furthermore, these are often remastered and released in high definition. So, although I may find myself absent from my local multiplex, I doubt if I’ll want for quality entertainment. As for titles that I’m looking forward to, I await Paddington 2 to be released on VOD. I’m also intrigued by Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water. I suspect that this may well be a serious Oscar contender. Then of course we should not overlook that both Netflix and Amazon Prime are now making their own feature films. They have both the budgets and the market research to entice known directors to work for them. Again, this change in consumer habits has scope to have a major impact upon film in 2018.

I have enjoyed most of the new titles that I’ve bought this year but not all of them. There’s been some that have failed to please and others that have proven to be flawed. Then there has been my ongoing relationship with the MMO genre as I still have a handful of these games installed on my PC. Let it suffice to say that only one of these titles has managed to maintain my interest. I suspect that the MMO genre per se is in for a year of change in 2018. As for the wider aspects of gaming, I wouldn’t say it has been an especially edifying year for the game industry or the associated fan culture. The “goodwill” based band-aid that has remained in place for the last few years was finally torn off in 2017, exposing a festering self-inflicted wound.

I started off the year by purchasing The Elder Scrolls Online Imperial Edition, as I fancied spending time in an MMO. Sadly, the game failed to grab my attention. This was mainly due to having spent so much time playing Skyrim and being somewhat burned out on the entire Elder Scrolls vibe. I also found the requirement for mods somewhat troubling, feeling that a game should have adequate UI facilities present. It’s also a very solo friendly MMO, which in some way negates its multiplayer status. Why not just play a fully customised version of one of the earlier games in the franchise? I also tried in 2017 to make a sustained return to LOTRO. Northern Ithilien held my interest but once the game moved onto the Black Gates it soon waned. Mordor is a great zone on paper but its grindy requirements and relentlessly dour environment killed my passion. STO remains a casual friendly experience and due to there being regular events throughout the year, it facilitates setting goals and achievements. I also jumped on the Destiny 2 bandwagon and was surprised how agreeable it is. Its genre spanning nature scratched several of my gaming itches.
My single player experience was also varied in 2017. For Honor proved to be exactly as I expected; gripping in principle but beyond my personal skillset to play to any degree of success. However, Sniper Elite 4 proved to be a sound buy. The main game and DLC were well conceived and their extensive game maps allow for multiple and varied play throughs. I also dabbled with co-operative play which proved a very interesting experience. Overall this was rewarding purchase as I clocked up over 91 hours in-game. Thanks to discount key sites, I managed to purchase several titles at low prices. I bought Mafia III after it was reduced by 75% and enjoyed the games central story. I also pre-ordered the Gold Edition of Middle-earth: Shadow of War and secured a discount. Although the structure of that game has been compromised to accommodate microtransactions, I still liked the gameplay and the preposterous lore-breaking narrative. 2017 also included some minor surprises. I was not expecting further DLC for Two Worlds II but Topware released both new single player and co-op content. I was also intrigued by the recent update to Star Trek: Bridge Crew, allowing the game to be played in conventional desktop mode, rather than VR.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a year in gaming without some sort of controversy and man did 2017 have one. The blight that is microtransactions which has been slowly spreading from mobile gaming to the so-called Triple A scene, reached a head November. Star Wars: Battlefront II received such a backlash from its customer base that the story even appeared in mainstream news. Disney eventually intervened and ensured that EA suspended the real money loot boxes in the game. It would appear that the genie is finally out of the bottle and loot box culture is now coming under the scrutiny of legislative bodies all over the world. Apple has recently waded into the debate as it wants loot box odds to be fully disclosed. What happens next is anyone guess but I think that game developers may have to rethink the monetisation of their games. I also think that the tide is slowly turning with regard to early access and games that launch in a patently broken state. I avoided buying Friday the 13th: The Game until six months after it’s problematic release and I still feel that it is very much a work in progress. Several high-profile gaming commentators are loudly advocating a boycott of this trend and I think it may be getting some traction. Time will tell.
2017 once again validated my position of distancing myself from parts of the gaming community. The past twelve months have shown that a substantial number of gamers remain unreconstructed, self-centred, emotionally illiterate man-children. Developers, journalists and You Tube personalities are still regularly threatened and abused if something that is vaguely controversial is said. Outdated and blinkered views about gaming and its culture still abound. You only have to see how Jim Sterling’s Commentocracy has raised the hackles of the usual suspects, to recognise that gaming culture is still far from united. However, I believe this stems from a broader malady that seems to be permeating all aspects of modern life. But the hate, bile and stupidity are not the total picture and there are still many bloggers, streamers and content creators that celebrate and promote the positive side of gaming. I intend to make such individuals my focus in 2018. I’m not one for making predictions but I have a feeling that 2018 may be a milestone year for gaming. Potentially it presents an opportunity for the industry to either get on track or alternatively implode and suffer a slow long death. Perhaps next year’s review will have the answer.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had to mute several people (including some whom I like) and a ton of keywords over the last twelve months, so my timeline doesn’t become a portal into the seventh circle of hell. Contrary to the usual arguments that get trotted out, I don’t live in an echo chamber. I follow a diverse and eclectic group of people with a broad range of view and opinions. I simply filter out those who hold a binary view on all major issues and have with a predilection for being bellicose, bombastic and crass. If your default reaction to everything is get angry first and ask questions later, I think I can live without your opinions. Be that as it may, 2017 has been an especially rewarding year with my Twitter friends and I have greatly appreciated their company.

Like many people of my age, I’ve found that my personal social circle has shrunk over the years. It is simply the reality of growing older. I have a handful of close friends who I endeavour to see every few months, but my social life isn’t anything like it was when I was twenty. But I’m fine with this because I regularly interact with like minded individuals on Twitter. Through the process of day-to-day banter, I’ve got to know a lot of people. Despite being from various corners of the globe and different backgrounds, there is so much common ground. I like to check in with folk on Twitter, exchange ideas and post pictures and anecdotes about the absurdity of life in the UK. It’s great fun when others do the same and I find out about some minor cultural difference where they live, that I wasn’t aware of. Also, like some others out there, it’s been a difficult year for me. There’s been a lot of illness in my family. Sometimes the odd kind remark on social media can really make the difference. It has for me.
Although I still write and podcast, I no longer look to social media to drive traffic to my work. It actually makes up a small percentage of my blog traffic. Persistently posting material every day seems to be the best way to raise your profile but that’s a separate matter. Twitter now is mainly for fun and that is the way it will remain until it ceases to be so. However, I have learned a few things this year about the foibles of social media. I tweeted a minor political post to the TV and Radio broadcaster James O'Brien in Autumn, which he then subsequently retweeted. For the next two days my timeline was swamped by notifications of further retweets and comments that I was automatically copied into. It made conducting my usual badinage difficult. I also made the mistake of correcting someone who had misinterpreted something I had written. Sadly, as it was to do with an ongoing political demonstration, you can guess how it ended. For the next six hours I was copied into an argument that grew exponentially between so many people, that ignoring or muting them all became impossible.
I have two old friends that have moved to the US and we have a private Facebook page where we catch up. Apart from this one activity my relationship with this social media platform has declined. Frankly I’m bemused why it remains so popular with people, however a casual perusal of Facebook groups and pages has shown me why it is such a great tool for political propaganda. With regard to Instagram I’m afraid I have turned into one of those persons who just posts picture of his grandchildren. But this is the nature of social media. You use the platforms that suit you in a manner that fits your needs. If I were thirty years younger and embarking upon a career as a professional writer, I would certainly look into how to harness these powerful tools to my advantage. But I’m not, so I’ll more than likely just continue to post my own “unique brand” of humour online and hang out with my Twitter chums in 2018. And why not, as the late, great Barry Norman use to say.

However, 2016 has been unique in many respects. Political and social tides have changed in the West and there is much to reflect upon in the real world. Certainly, my appetite for creating content has taken a knock and I have at times stopped and wondered if it really is all worth the bother. But after such moments of introspection I still see the benefits of the written word or bellowing in to a microphone, so here we are once again. The only difference this time is rather than multiple posts, I can pretty much distil my thought on 2016 in one simple account.

Gaming:
To things have had a major impact upon my gaming this year. A lack of time and too few new titles that aroused my interest. I started the year playing through Hearts of Stone, the first DLC for The Witcher III: Wild Hunt and continued with the second expansion, Blood and Wine when it was released in May. I waxed lyrical about the quality of this RPG last year and will continue to do so this time. The last DLC not only added yet another superbly crafted narrative but refined the game mechanics and system even further. I think it will be a long time before I find another game from this genre that offers anywhere near a comparable experience.
MMO wise I have continued to regularly log into Star Trek Online during 2016 as it has frequently had new content to explore. This year being the 50th Anniversary of Star Trek, the new expansion, Agents of Yesterday, offered an appropriate homage to the original series. The new lighting system has improved the overall aesthetic of the game and it’s clear that developers Cryptic have plenty more in store for the MMO. It’s recent port to consoles clearly indicates that the game is in a healthy state.
LOTRO has had a curious year. I took a six-month break from the game due to the repetitive and formulaic nature of the new content. Yet the Battle of Pelennor Fields brought me back, being surprisingly well realised given the restrictions of the ageing game engine. Update 19 released in October took the game one step closer to Mordor. As ever the epic central story continues to be written to a high standard and certainly compensates for other more pedestrian regional quests. Recent news that ex Turbine staff have formed a new independent company and taken over the development of the game does seem to have renewed interest in the MMO. I remain cautiously optimistic for LOTRO’s future.
It would be remiss of me if I didn’t mention Overwatch. I played the open beta out of idle curiosity and was greatly surprised by how accessible the game is. It has now become my game of choice whenever I want a quick fix of entertainment. I’m still amazed at how equitable this team based, first person shooter is and how anyone can find a role to play, regardless of the style or abilities. It continues to add content and new characters ensuring longevity. Something that Pokémon Go has failed to do. This was another title that I was drawn to out of nostalgia and curiosity but it quickly became apparent that it was unsustainable.
TV and Movies:
I only went to my local multiplex to see movies upon their release, six time this year, which is unusual for me. This is mainly due to there being precious little of interest for me these days. Cinemas seem choked with Blockbusters and Super Hero movies. A lot of the more niche market, independent films have limited releases and tend to be available on-demand very quickly. Those movies I did see were suitably entertaining. Deadpool provided audiences with exactly what they expected and proved that the R rating could still be economically viable. Star Trek Beyond finally saw the new stories set in the Kelvin Timeline hit their stride. It offered a good character driven story that finally tapped in to the soul of the original series. Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them also proved to be a crowd pleaser with excellent production values and a decent storyline. I have high hopes for this off shoot of the Wizarding World franchise. Rogue One certainly met with my approval and filled a suitable gap in the Star Wars lore. I almost got as much fun out of the fan driven debates about the story as the film itself.
TV once again proved to be the home of more cerebral and densely plotted drama. Stranger Things was a wonderful homage to eighties genre cinema and popular culture. Finally embracing both Amazon Prime and Netflix certainly afforded our household with more choice and provided a respite from the scourge of advertising which just seems to become increasingly preposterous and crass. The Man in the High Castle provided a suitable bookend to the start and end of the year and continues to be both intriguing and entertaining. It has also been beneficial to have access to all previous series of Star Trek and work my way through those shows I’m less familiar with.
Network TV on both sides of the Atlantic has been entertaining. There are still far too many shows to keep up with and I’m constantly amazed at how many shows bite the dust after one lacklustre season. Elementary still maintains a high standard of writing and the central characters of Holmes and Watson still have engaging story arcs. The final season of Person of Interest was both succinct and fitting, providing a bitter sweet, yet plausible ending for the show. Blindpsot somehow made it to a second season and completely reinvented itself to try and escape the narrative knot it had go itself in to. Back in the UK, Endeavour once again proved to be both superbly acted and well written. It’s sedate pace and introspective themes continue to be captivating.
As a grandparent, I also watch a great deal of children’s television, especially those aimed at the pre-school demographic. Therefore, I would like to praise CBeebies for their continued quality programming and point out that Hey Duggee is a sublime show. If you are thirtysomething, then you’ll love the pop culture references that litter every episode. Plus, in the last few days, I also been caught up in the hype surrounding Guillermo del Toro’s Trollhunters. Let it suffice to say that it is charming and entertaining. It’s curious how some creative talents can handle sentimentality without tipping in to emotional overkill.
Blogging and Podcasting:
I stopped writing daily in 2016. I simply ran out of steam after five years and then real world changes meant that such a schedule was off the table for the immediate future. However, I managed to contribute to this year’s NBI and Blaugust, so I guess content creation wasn’t a complete write off (no pun intended). The Burton & Scrooge Podcast became The Burton & Scrooge Uncut Podcast and followed a somewhat erratic release pattern. I enjoy recording with my co-host Brian but I’m thinking we need to either seriously rethink the show format for 2017 or take a break for a while. I’m determined to get my movie related show in to production next year and I also need to return to writing my book, which ground to a halt this summer.
It would appear that real life and all that it contains caught up with many of my blogging and podcasting colleagues this year. Thus, there was reduced output from certain quarters and some went so far as to take a break. It’s sad but totally understandable. Yet it was not all doom and gloom. Syp over at Bio Break continues to write and podcast with great enthusiasm. The year also saw the launch of the Geek to Geek Podcast with Void and Beej. Their dedication and focus has been a source of inspiration and the show itself is thoroughly entertaining. It also reacquainted me with the concept that you can agree to disagree, cordially. Pam over at Cannot be Tamed also produced lots of quality content via blog post, podcast and You Tube. Joseph (formerly known as the MMO troll) kept creating his own unique brand of content with the Pthppt! podcast. It always raises a wry smile and I’ll happily listen to topics that I usually wouldn’t consider exploring.
Valedictory Remarks:
For me the overwhelming impression that 2016 leaves is ones of change. This has been reflected in politics, world events, within the entertainment industry per se and even my personal life. Yet change is an inherent part of life and cannot be avoided. Therefore, I intend to start 2017 with a positive outlook and rather than focus on what I can’t do, explore what can be achieved with the time and resources that I have. I’m also sure there will still be good content available in all mediums. It may simply be a case of having to broaden one’s search. I recently discovered to my surprise that there’s a fourth instalment of Sniper Elite arriving in spring and I’m still greatly looking forward to Star Trek Discovery. I shall also continue to blog and podcast in my own peculiar way. Perhaps I may even encourage others to do so. After all, you’ve got to have a project.
A Year in TV
In recent years TV and cinema have effectively exchanged roles. When I was a child, cinema was the home of narrative driven drama, the exploration of complex social issues and at times even art. It attracted the best writer and as a result the best actors; whereas TV was the home of Airwolf. Thirty years on the opposite is now true. Cinema is often choked with bloated, bombastic franchises, largely devoid of any depth or substance. Television produces numerous multi-layered adult dramas that provide both writers and actors with far broader concepts to explore. Of course there are exceptions on both sides but broadly the analogy rings true.

Once again the past twelve months has provided far more quality television than I could possibly keep up with. Therefore I have confined myself to watching a handful of shows that I can apply myself to. Fortunately some content producers are now favouring shorter seasons, so I have managed to binge view some additional series after their initial run along with someone off dramas and miniseries. Here is a selection of some of the material that I have found entertaining and engaging in 2015.
The Blacklist
In spring I had a gap in my viewing schedule and decided to try season one of The Blacklist. I must admit the pilot episode with its strong opening gambit really grabbed my attention. Needless to say I voraciously consumed the first two seasons. So why is this show so good? Well frankly that question needs a blog post in itself but here are a few bullet points:
The Blacklist maintains a good balance between traditional procedural stories and the ongoing mystery of Raymond "Red" Reddington.
The case and the criminals that feature are consistently inventive and provide a great vehicle for guest star appearances.
The long term back story unfolds at a measured pace and doesn’t overwhelm the episodic format.
James Spader is utterly compelling and just excels at these sorts of roles.
Thunderbirds Are Go
Rebooting a show such as Thunderbirds is a tall order. For it to work you need to be inventive and find a way for the format to appeal to both old and new audiences. It’s a balancing act between keeping the heart of the old show and establishing a new identity. However ITV Studios and Pukeko Pictures have manged to do this and do it well. The production is a superb blend of CGI and miniatures, providing the show with as strong visual aesthetic. Yet despite providing a very contemporary technological environment Thunderbirds Are Go still has numerous homages to the original series.
Ultimately Thunderbirds Are Go strength lies in its scripts and characterisations. Despite running half the length of the original shows the Tracey brothers have established their identities over the first season and are extremely likeable. The stories often have a subtle moral subtext that extols the virtues of team work and collaboration. Furthermore the score by Ben and Nick Foster is suitably heroic. Keeping David Graham as the voice of Parker was also an incredibly good call. I’m very pleased that this show has found an audience and that the kids like it. Roll on season two!
The Hunt
The BBC has always been at the cutting edge of documentary film making. They continue to employ the best wildlife photographers in this field and showcase their work to great effect. Obviously the dulcet tones of Sir David Attenborough are an invaluable asset to these productions. His narrations are informative, enthralling and humane. This latter attribute is especially important as The Hunt focuses on the continual struggle between predator and prey in the natural world. It can be quite grim at times but such is the nature of subject. Over the course of its seven episodes viewers are shown Crocodiles ambushing the migrating Wildebeests, Cheetahs stalking Gazelle and Polar Bears climbing a steep cliff face to feed on the eggs and chicks of nesting birds.
The Hunt is a prime example of intelligent and engaging wildlife documentary film making. Too many natural history programs these days seem to be nothing more than “isn’t nature amazing” or “aren’t we clever, we built a Penguincam”. Considering the scope of The Hunt, the show manages to find the right tone. We are shown the predators stalking their prey but the kills are not excessively dwelt upon. That is not to say that the film makers shy away from the very nature of the subject. Instead they show a measured approach, ensuring that the show remains accessible to a broad audience. The behind the scenes footage shown at the end of each episode are also very insightful and informative.
Ash vs Evil Dead
I was sceptical about Ash vs Evil Dead when I first heard about the show. Not because of its pedigree which is outstanding; my concerns where with the thirty minute format, which traditionally is the province of sitcoms. However after having watched most of season one I can say that my fears were unfounded. Ash vs Evil Dead uses this relatively short running time to its benefit. Each week the story is advanced, there is a wealth of amusing banter between the cast and a blood soaked set piece. The creative freedom that cable networks afford is invaluable to this production. This show is profane, violent and has lashings of gallows humour. Sam Raimi’s original tone is still maintained and runs through each episode. Oh and Bruce Campbell is a joy to watch.
The Man in the High Castle
I first found out about this show via a billboard outside a supermarket I regularly use. At first I thought it was an advertisement for a movie, and then I noticed that it was an Amazon Prime production. A little research piqued my curiosity so I took advantage of a free trial for the video on demand service and binged viewed the entire first season. I must admit that although I enjoyed this curious story set in an alternative reality where Germany won World War II, I was somewhat wrong footed by its philosophical and metaphysical subtext and plotlines. However that in many ways is part of the shows charm as it doesn’t just pursue a traditional linear “alternative history” storyline.
As ever with dramas, the most interesting characters are the villains and those who seem to be at the mercy of fate. Both Rufus Sewell as SS Obergruppenführer Smith and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as Trade Minister Nobusuke Tagomi, give robust performances and at times are more interesting than the main protagonists. The production design is also a continuous source of interest with common place items, iconic buildings and everyday technology given a veneer of Nazi aesthetic or Japanese ambience. It should be noted that as this is not a network show so the content is pitched at a more mature audience. The cliffhanger ending of episode ten was very intriguing. I have high expectations for season two.

I started 2015 playing RPGs. Despite becoming bored with Dragon Age: Inquisition and its ponderous storyline, I still found this particular genre engaging. January and February are often slows months in my line of work, so it’s a good time of year to immerse oneself in games of this type. I played through both Arcania : Gothic 4 and Rise of the Argonauts and found them both to be enjoyable. Neither of these titles was revolutionary, being mainly “business as usual” RPGs. However both were bought as part of gaming bundles and the discounted price does have an impact upon my gaming expectations. For what they were, I enjoyed them.

During the course of the year I strayed from my using game choices on two occasions and both proved to be good decisions. Hand of Fate is an action role-playing video game with roguelike and deck-building elements. I usually never touch deck based games but the fact that each hand of cards plays out in third person action combat intrigued me. Furthermore the creators Defiant Development have continually patched and added free DLC to the game over the course of the year. The other title that was a departure from my usual purchasing habits was The 39 Steps, which is a digital adaptation of John Buchan’s classic story. The interactive narrative that allows you to engage with the world around you and discover the story is imaginative and creative. I hope that Scottish developer The Story Mechanics do more famous novels in this idiom.
As I stated in my previous post about my gaming experiences of 2015, that I’ve changed my stance on the MMO genre. I have continued to play through content updates for LOTRO and am overall pleased that such material is still being produced. However the latest update set in Minas Tirith is of varying quality and for ever good and engaging quest line, there is also an arbitrary or frankly disappointing one. I have never been a fan of the Epic Battles but the two new ones set upon the walls of Minas Tirith are extremely underwhelming. As ever the NPCs do most of the fighting and I found my involvement relegated to cutting grappling hooks from the walls. Navigating around the wall and city circle below is confusing and frustrating. Update 17 is also somewhat unstable and I have had more crashes to desktop over the last month than I’ve had in the game for the last few years.
Star Trek Online proved to be far more engaging in 2015 than in previous years. The Delta Recruitment event was a great way to encourage players back to the game and to reward levelling. I enjoyed my experience so much I bought a discount lifetime subscription. Like LOTRO, STO benefits from a great IP and they really do utilise it well. Cast members from the show continue to voice characters that they’ve played and the standard of writing is consistently high. STO is also the only game in which I’ll grind through seasonal festivals as Cryptic are one of the few developers that giveaway decent loot, rather generic cosmetic items. I have earned two Tier 6 ships over the course of the year, both of which are worth £20 each.
I tried Marvel Heroes this summer after hearing positive feedback about the game from several friends. I must admit the game does provide a great way to scratch that pew pew itch and the barrier to entry is low. You can roll an alt and be playing within minutes of downloading the client. It’s also one of those titles where there’s always something going on or something to work towards. However because I don’t have any major ties to the source IP, I decided not to make this one of my primary gaming titles. I was hoping that the Heart of Thorns expansion for Guild Wars 2 would fill that role. Sadly the new landmass and class were not to my liking and ArenaNet are simply taking the game in a direction I’m not happy with. So Guild Wars 2 was finally uninstalled from my PC where it’s been since the games launch in August 2012.
It is customary to list ones favourite games at this time of the year or pick a specific title that is worthy of praise. For me that has to be The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt. The fact that I played over three hundred hours between October and November indicates how compelling I found it. The open world is magnificent, rich with detail and a dynamic weather system. The game mechanics are sufficiently varied to be engaging without being too complex. You can play tactically relying upon your spells or focus on potions and support items if you please. Naturally if you prefer a more hands on approach you can go full out DPS. But the games crowning glory is its narrative and the sense that your decisions really do have an impact upon the world. I cannot remember the last time I played such a gripping story and cared this much about the central characters. The story telling in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is adult and complex. This is not a binary world with clear cut consequences.
2015 has seen a reduction in my overall gaming per se. My free time has fresh demands upon it and coupled with my changing relationship to both fandom and the wider gaming community, I don’t feel disposed towards playing as much. The close of the year has seen me dabble with the cell phone controlled RPG, Eon Altar and that has been a positive experience so far. I also bought GTA V at a discounted price so have explored that open world in recent weeks. At present I do not have any major titles in mind to purchase in 2016. I suspect that the next twelve months will more than likely follow the same path as the last, with regard to game releases and my attitude towards them. I suspect if gaming wants to vie for my attention in 2016, it will have to pull something quite special out of the bag.

This time last year I wrote a two part post called A Year in MMOs. Twelve months later I find myself writing a similar round-up of my gaming activities. However this time round the title has now become A Year in Gaming. One of the most significant changes for me over the course of 2015 has been my step away with the MMO genre. Game design and mechanics naturally evolve over time and are often driven by basic market forces. There is therefore a wealth of differences between games such as Ultima Online and Guild wars 2. Although I have adapted to the more casual game play that is now prevalent in the genre recently, I do find that MMOs are becoming increasingly homogeneous. Beyond their own setting and lore, new titles seldom have anything different to offer with regard to game design. They lack of a killer mechanic; something that makes them a radically different experience from their competitors. Then there is the requirement to invest time in such games, which is something I can no longer do. The days of me playing a particular game every day for five hours or more have past.
So this year I’ve found myself playing more single player games; titles that can be played and completed within a reasonable time span. In fact I found this to be a satisfying aspect in my overall gaming experience. I like the idea of playing through a compelling story at a measured pace and then reaching a definitive conclusion. This may take just a dozen hours, as was the case with Hand of Fate and Rise of the Argonauts or over three hundred with titles such as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. It is an experience more akin to reading a book, indicating that a strong narrative is an essential aspect of my gaming enjoyment. It would seem that as I get older I want less of a challenge and more of an emphasis on entertainment. Excessively complex games, with a steep learning curve and chronic skills bloat are not as attractive to me as they use to be.
Another facet of gaming that has changed for me this year has been my perception of the wider community, including both fan and professional websites. I have stopped reading several news outlets and blogs simply because they do not provide any valuable information about games any more. 2015 has been the year of the live stream of the "let's play" video on You Tube and these are now an integral part of my decision making process as to whether to buy a game or not. However I’m increasingly finding that my age often put me at odds with many of the You Tube personalities. I appreciate that many are running commercial endeavours but their need to “entertain” and be “characters” for me gets in the way of the reviews and critiques. Take for example Jim Sterling’s #FuckKonami “campaign”. I broadly agree with the sentiments he’s trying to express but the very terms it’s couched in just strike me a puerile and therefore mitigate much of the point.
When you are a fan of something, you often feel that it is something special, unique and meaningful. There is a chance that the object of your affection is all those things but more often than not that is simply wishful thinking. Games are commercial leisure products, made with the express purpose of making money for the publishers. The wider industries associated with marketing and reviewing them are similarly self-serving. Perhaps part of a gamer’s personal journey over time is finding a sense of perspective on these matters. I believe this year I have found such a point of equilibrium. Gaming is an entertaining leisure activity and that on occasions can be art. But for most of the time it is an ephemeral pastime and a shamelessly commercial endeavour (I’m looking at you Star wars Battlefront) and therefore should be treated as such.
A positive lesson I have learnt over the course of this year’s gaming is that I now have a very clear handle on what I want from the title that I play. Apart from one mistake which was the Guild Wars 2 expansion Heart of Thorns, I have enjoyed all of the purchases that I have made this year. This essential comes down to fully researching each title and what it specifically has to offer as well as at what price point I purchase a product at. Once again it is interesting how the financial cost of a game impacts upon ones expectations. I no longer feel like a child in a toy shop, running from display to display, overwhelmed by the choice available. 2015 has been the year of coming to terms with what games are and what I want from them. It's only taken me a quarter of a century!
A Year in Social Media
The internet is awash with competing forms of social media, all offering a platform for you to interact with your peers. Although I feel that there are a lot of positive aspects to all these mediums, there is also a downside. Need I really catalogue all the iniquities of Twitter or Facebook? Let it suffice to say that the internet giveth and it also taketh away. Social media is like any other tool and therefore has to be used appropriately. If used correctly then it can be informative, entertaining and a great way to broaden your horizons. The alternative is a portal into a world of anger, stupidity and shit. 2015 was the year that I feel I finally got my personal relationship with social media right.

I have never really seen any practical benefits to me or my writing in using Facebook or Google +. Until recently all posts that were made on Contains Moderate Peril were automatically posted to both platforms. However this failed to bring readers to the primary website and resulted in a separate audience growing on both alternate outlets. Effectively this increased the work load as there were now three platforms to be marketed to and engaged with. This struck me a counterproductive, so this autumn I ceased to use both these mediums and focused upon generating traffic solely for Contains Moderate Peril. Abandoning these two social media platforms proved quite easy. Facebook has become increasingly obtrusive in recent years and I didn’t care for the way it continued to harvest my phone for information for its own benefit.
For the present twitter continues to be my primary social media of choice. The rule of thumb with this particular platform seems to be you get back what you put in. Your personal twitter experience comes down to who you follow and how you engage with them. Some high profile twitter users do interact with their followers. Others simply use it as an impersonal means of marketing and promoting. Other unofficial “rules” to consider is it’s not mandatory to follow someone back just because they follow you. It’s also worth remembering that if you don’t like what someone is saying then stop following them. Despite what some folk would have you believe, twitter is not a microcosm of popular sentiment and is not a definitive litmus test on any weighty issue. Twitter amplifies extremes and it’s worth remembering that “empty vessels make the most noise”.
I genuinely enjoy the banter I share on twitter and like interacting with a broad and diverse group of people from around the world. However an incident this year raised the question as to whether I was spending too much time in an online echo chamber. Should I include news feeds and political commentary in my twitter timeline? Was it incongruous to flit from the ephemeral to weightier issues? Should I segregate such content or integrate it further into my twitter feeds? I eventually decided to move some of the more challenging material to a different twitter account. As I use TweetDeck I can display separate timelines in multiple columns; when required content can be temporarily muted.
Finally late in the year I discovered Slack. The Gaming and Entertainment Network set up a group and I was invited to join. Although I was aware of this team collaboration tool and had heard many positive things about it, it wasn’t until I used it did I fully realise how flexible a platform it is. It’s ideal for sharing all manner of material within a group and project planning. Or if you prefer it’s also a great way to talk shit with your friends. I can see this particular platform featuring heavily in all future undertakings both by Contains Moderate Peril and the Burton & Scrooge podcast. If you haven’t used it I would urge you to check it out.
Social media like any other communication product seems to have a distinct pattern to its lifecycle. There are earlier adopters that enjoy the benefits of using a product that is not yet mainstream. However sooner or later the world and the wife will discover the new platform and it will inevitably start to become more commercial and burdened by the lowest common denominator. Sponsored tweets are a prime example of this this process. I shall continue to use twitter in 2016 although I do think that may be it has peaked within this framework. Therefore I shall be keeping my eye out for the next emerging social media platform and may well break my own habit of not becoming an early adopter.

As technology has such an impact upon so much of our lives I thought I’d take some time to reflect upon how I have personally used it over the last twelve months. Having worked in the IT industry for twenty years my relationship with technology has constantly evolved over time. As I’ve stated before both on the blog and podcast I no longer feel compelled to be an early adopter or at thecutting edge of technological change. The hardware and apps that I use from day to day are tools and I now treat them as such, rather than as fashion accessories. Practicality and functionality are the things I look for the most in the products that I use and if there are no immediate benefits to be gained then it doesn’t get purchased and installed. It would seem the reality and personal maturity has finally trumped the “wow” factor.

First off, the only major change I made to my PC this year has been an upgrade in operating system. Like 110 million other people I opted to install Windows 10 and have been broadly pleased with the results. It corrected a lot of the issues associated with Windows 8 and even produced a performance increase from my year old computer. Beyond this all other tinkering with my computer has been very low key. In July I bought a new steel series mouse which has proven to be good choice. Then in October I changed web browsers, moving from Chrome back to Firefox. If anything 2016 was more of note for the amount of software I uninstalled from my PC. The rule of thumb has been if it’s not being actively used then it goes. As a result many games and productivity tools have been removed.
Another major technological shift for me this year has been the way I use my smartphone. As with my PC I have been very particular about what apps I’ve installed but I’ve also broadened my usage. I do an increasing amount of personal banking via my phone as both the domestic banks I use have well written and secure apps, offering a broad range of services. Whilst travelling in May, I used my phone to successfully navigate from London to Liverpool, book accommodation and find a suitable restaurant. Both my smartphone and tablet are my main communications hubs, with access to all my email and social media accounts. It would appear that there is now a distinct delineation of services between my PC and phone; the former being a tool for content creation and the latter my own personal switchboard.
With regard to blogging and podcasting 2015 has been the year I finally stopped using WordPress. Although a very flexible platform, maintaining a self-hosted site becomes increasing involved the more it grows and expands. My move to Squarespace has proven to be hassle free and a sound choice. It is also a far more financially viable option; an important factor as both blogging and podcasting are ongoing financial black holes. Zencastr has proven to be a most effective means of recording the Burton & Scrooge podcast and has helped streamline the production process. It records from Skype, using the individual sound card of all those participating in the call. It then stores them as separate but synchronised tracks via Dropbox. The only improvement left for me to carry out in 2016 is the purchase a new microphone.
2015 was also the year my DVR became redundant. My set top box still has programmes recorded from the previous Christmas which have still not been watched. I simply don’t view live TV content anymore as on demand players have eliminated the need for me to record content. Binge viewing popular shows has proven far more satisfactory than the traditional approach of one episode per week. Even my consumption of news and current affairs has moved from TV to online. Radio has also become a medium that I increasingly use, mainly through a phone or a tablet. Furthermore when radio cannot provide the entertainment I’m looking for then podcasts will often suffice. Podcast and Radio Addict is my app of choice for both these mediums.
It would appear that technological downsizing and using new mediums for traditional content have been the major themes in my use of technology over the last year. I think the defetishising of gadgets and hardware has been for me a positive step. The pace of change once again has proven to be both surprising and exhilarating. I have also noted that a healthy dose of scepticism has been beneficial. My first forays into the use of contactless payments were problematic as I expected they would be. 4G coverage is also a term I continue to be wary of. However overall I have felt that my use of technology has been positive over the last twelve months and I look forward to seeing what changes 2016 will bring.
