Star Trek Online: Experimental Graphics

Screen Space Reflection STO

2026 is proving to be a good year for the MMORPG, Star Trek Online. After wrestling control of their game back and reassembling “the band”, IE as much of the original development team as possible, Developers Cryptic are slowly but steadily addressing the games multiple flaws. This is a much needed undertaking as STO has stagnated for a long time. However, over the last twelve months Cryptic have revised multiple elements of the game such as a general overhaul of Deep Space Encounters and the Endeavour system. These improvements have been well received by players but the jewel in the crown of this ongoing project has been the reinstating of several classic Episodes back into the game, all be it in a revised format. STO needs more story content because sadly what has been released in recent years has been of a lesser standard compared to the halcyon days of the Agents of Yesterday and Victory is Life expansions.

As part of this ongoing improvement program, Cryptic have now added some new graphical features to the game. This coincided with the start of the Halloween event and the annual Task Force Operation “The Fall of the Old Ones” has been revised to showcase these new experimental graphics. By default, these new settings are disabled, allowing players to opt in, rather than imposing them and any potential glitches they may incur. To enable them, simply go to the Advanced tab in the Settings menu and toggle whatever new features you wish under the Experimental heading. These include such things as, Volumetric Lighting which adds sun rays, light shafts and illuminated fog when atmospheric particles are present. Then there’s Parallax Occlusion Mapping which modifies texture sampling to make flat surfaces appear to have 3D depth for select materials. Other features include Space Soft Shadows, Screen Space Reflections and Volumetric Cloud/Volumetric Cloud Shadow.

It should be noted that results for these features will vary, depending upon your GPU, screen resolution and whether you have a top end gaming rig or a bargain basement, potato PC. Either way, I find is pleasing that Cryptic are still trying to coax some performance gains from a game engine that is 18 years old. However, despite the lighting and visual overhauls, 64-Bit conversion and general UI and back-end tweaks, Cryptic only have a finite amount of room to manoeuvre in. An engine replacement based on a modern third-party products such as Unreal or Unity would essentially mean building a brand-new game from scratch. Given the age of STO, its robust but niche player base and steady operational budget, a full rewrite is financially unviable. Such an undertaking would cost millions of dollars. Such a massive financial risk with no guarantee of recouping costs, effectively quashes such dreams. Hence it is best to enjoy what is available while it still is.
