Blaugust 2026: Let Writing Commence
I have been writing online for nearly two decades. I don’t claim to be good or accomplished but what I can say with certainty is that the more often you write, the easier it becomes. For those who are new to writing a blog and the Blaugust Festival of Blogging, possibly the biggest hurdle that you now have to get over, is writing your first post of the month. You spent the lead up to this event sorting out your blog templates, fine tuning the backend and possibly banking some ideas. Or you may have decided to just wing it and make it all up as you go along. Both are perfectly valid approaches. However, there is one thing left to do that cannot be put off, avoided or danced around. Writing. At some point you’ve got to do it. Or bail on the event. The proverbial “shit or get off the pot”.
I think I’ve participated in all previous iterations of Blaugust and before that the Newbie Blogger Initiative. I have written numerous first day posts where I extol the benefits of writing both personally and for society. I always stress the social and community aspect. Sadly there comes a point when repeating yourself becomes a little tiresome, so another approach needs to be found to sell things. I personally like quotations. They show that many of the struggles we face in life are in fact universal and if other have beaten them, so can I. A good quote imparts wisdom and can also be charismatic, witty and even fun. So, can I find any suitable quotes about the merits of writing? Yes I believe I can.
“If you cannot write well, you cannot think well; if you cannot think well, others will do your thinking for you.”
Oscar Wilde
Too heavy? May be. Let’s try and find something that doesn’t imply some dystopian police state. Okay, how about this?
Ernest Hemmingway doing his famous George A. Romero impression
“The first draft of anything is shit.”
Ernest Hemingway
Too dispiriting? Possibly. But there is a lot of truth in the quote. On to another then and let’s see if we can find the right tone.
“There is something delicious about writing the first words of a story. You never quite know where they'll take you.”
Beatrix Potter
That’s more like it. Very positive. It makes writing sound very adventurous.
“If you can't annoy somebody, there is little point in writing.”
Kingsley Amis
Blimey O’Riley. If that isn’t a major incentive to write I don’t what is. It certainly is a good reason to start typing immediately after you’ve read this post.
Advice from this particular Khajiit is often questionable
“Writing is a great way to become rich and popular. Furthermore it’s easy.”
M'aiq the Liar
Damn. Where did that come from? Ignore it. It’s total bullshit. Focus on the other ones.
“The scariest moment is always just before you start.”
Stephen King
So we’ve completed our motivational quote journey and arrived back where we started. With Blaugust 2026 starting and everyone publishing their first post. I hope everyone participating enjoys the event and gains something positive from the experience. I’m looking forward to reading a lot of new material and following new blogs. I have updated my bloroll page, so that it shows the 20 latest posts from those who are taking part in Blaugust 2026. It also has a comprehensive directory of over 250 blogs, which includes previous Blaugust alumni and long term bloggers who are now established community members. Some sites have not seen any content posted for a while but I like to leave them on the blogroll in case their owners resume writing. In the meantime, may I wish all those taking part in this years Festival of Blogging Qapla’. Time for one more quote.
“Good luck everyone. Especially me.”
