Preparing Your Blog For Blaugust 2026
Prior to last year’s Blaugust: Festival of Blogging, I upgraded Contains Moderate Peril to the latest version of Squarespace. There are still some aspects of the site that need fine tuning but overall, I am happy with the appearance of my blog and its respective functionality. With this year’s writing event fast approach, I decided to tackle over the last few days, some of those finer points that need tweaking. I have wanted a post counter on the site for a long time but unfortunately there is no native Squarespace widget for this basic function. I also felt the need to upgrade the blogroll, as the current one didn’t support RSS feeds from certain sites (e.g. Google Blogger) and was dependent upon a third party service, Elfsight, which wasn’t ideal. Both of these issues have now been addressed and I am pleased with the results. There is now a post counter on the Blog Archive page, which seems a logical place to have it and the Blogroll is now far more comprehensive.

While making these changes, I decided to split the Blogroll into two distinct parts. I wanted to list all the various websites and blogs that I follow via Feedly which is currently 200 plus. This is made up of longstanding content creators and those who have taken part in previous Blaugust: Festival of Blogging. Some of these sites haven’t posted for a while but I was reticent to prune the list as some may resume posting in the future. Due to the size of the list, I thought to best to break it down alphabetically and just have links to each individual site. I then decided to have a more specific list of the twenty latest posts taken from the blogging community and have this display in a matrix separate from the traditional blogroll. At present the “twenty latest posts “list again draws upon older data. However, I shall revise this to reflect the 2026 event, once it is under way. Overall, I am please with the revised Blogroll page and think it cleanly and efficiently displays its data.
Another issue that I am currently addressing is resizing or replacing images that are published in blog posts prior to July 2025. These are all of a lower resolution of 650 pixels. Also many of these posts do not have a “featured image” when listed on the main blog page or blog archive page of Contains Moderate Peril. This issue makes no difference to readers who view the site on a phone or tablet but it does cause inconsistency to those who visit the blog using a computer, which is a sizeable percentage of my total traffic. To identify the size of the various images that have been posted over the course of 11 years throughout over 2,000 posts, I have a custom read-only audit script which will parse all blog posts and ascertain what images are included and at what size. The data collated can then be dumped into a spreadsheet and used as a starting point to determine which images can be upscaled safely and which need to be replaced.
Sometimes there are advantages to hosting your blog on sites that have minimalist templates or only support plain text. This is because you only have to make a handful of design and aesthetical choices. However that being said, regardless of what options are available for your blog, often the owner is habitually unhappy with the layout and feels disposed to endless tinker with things. I sometimes fall into this category. However, this year I feel that I am making progress with fine tuning my blog and laying to rest my mainly unfounded “design concerns”. My advice to new Blaugust participants is to get any changes to your site done now and out of the way before August. One the Festival of Blogging starts, focus primarily on your writing, rather than the site itself. The back end can always be retrospectively improved. During Blaugust, content is king. A spiffy blog without any content is ultimately as useful as a chocolate teapot.
Software Updates
As part of our increasing dependency upon software, we have also grown accustomed to its associated foibles, especially the negative ones. Today, I upgraded my blog from Squarespace 7.0 to 7.1 and my PC operating system from Windows 10 to 11. I started early in the morning and ensured that all my personal data was backed up. My default expectation was that both processes would go wrong in some way, shape or form. Let’s take a moment to consider this mindset, which is born out of experience. It is now taken as read that whatever you upgrade, be it an app on your phone or a program on your PC, that it’s going to be problematic. It won’t be a seamless transition and you’ll end up having to do some sort of troubleshooting. Despite our lives becoming more dependent on such software, the quality of these products seems to be deteriorating. What a sorry state of affairs.

Setting aside the failures of the tech industry, I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that both upgrades went well, with no major fallout. With regard to Contains Moderate Peril, I am quite happy how individual posts are displayed. I just need to determine whether from now on, I can include images that scale to the width of the page (but display at full size when clicked on), rather than having to set them to a standard resolution. I also have to fix the main blog page, as it is currently showing each post in full, rather than just the first paragraph along with the option to “read more”. However, these are not deal breakers. The site is still functional for both PCs and mobile devices. Similarly, the Windows upgrade went well. I was interested to see that some of the formatting aspects of Windows 10 were carried over and as a result, I have not had to excessively tinker with the visuals of Windows 11.
Oddly, because things appear to have gone relatively smoothly, I cannot help but feel somewhat disconcerted. Mainly because, as mentioned earlier, we are so used to things just not going to plan these days with regard to the software we use. Hence for the next few days, I will remain prepared for some unforeseen technical issues to manifest themselves. If they materialise, so be it. If they do not, then it’s an added bonus. Hopefully, there’s nothing else on my PC that requires a major update, for the immediate future. That being said, I rebooted my phone earlier today and it has obviously installed an Android update. I only spotted this when I received a phone call and was furiously trying to swipe upwards to answer it. Turns out I now have to swipe to the right. Oh the pleasure of software upgrades! The tech companies obviously think that daily life just isn’t interesting enough.

Over the last five and a half years there has been no downtime, no software to update, no addons and plugins to manage and no additional charges due to traffic increase. Overall I like the service and therefore do not feel the need to change it. However, I think the site could do with a cosmetic overhaul. At present posts tend to look better on mobile devices than they do on PC. I also think the blog needs some additional functionality added that allows older content to be found more easily. However, I do not want the cosmetic changes to overshadow the content. The design needs to be clean, intuitive and functional. The focus of any blog should always be the writing.

I have collated a list of simple visual changes as well as some additional functionality that I wish to see added to Contains Moderate Peril. At present searching the site is a little rudimentary. As a blogger I not only want people to read my current content but to peruse older material. Therefore readers should be offered a selection of related material at the end of a post The system that is currently in place is somewhat basic. Images are important when writings about films or video games and so I want to be able to present pictures in a more versatile fashion than the current format. I would also like to be able to segregate content and be able to present exclusive material for subscribers. Finally, I want a greater degree of social media features. I need to make it easier for readers to leave comments and share posts. I’m also considering unified branding which raises the issue of a new logo.
In the past I have used Fiverr for minor design projects and voiceover recordings. Sadly, my last experience using this service was not a good one and the commissioned work was left incomplete. Hence for this forthcoming redesign, I will be employing a Squarespace specialist to undertake these changes. I have a sensible budget to work with and a short list of suitable candidates. Hopefully these proposed changes can be implemented by May. I have some ideas for some further projects but I think it’s best to focus on this redesign first. As ever with my life, there’s quite a lot going on at present, so I need to concentrate on writing and ensuring that new content is posted as often as possible.
