One Last PC Upgrade

Despite soaring prices, I managed to get a good deal on a new GPU a few days ago. After some thought, I decided it was more economically viable to upgrade my PC one last time, rather than replace it entirely. Amazon had a limited time offer on a Sapphire Pure Dual AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT Gaming OC 16GB, which seemed the best replacement for my RX 6650 XT 8GB. It was priced at £530 but usually sells at somewhere north of £600, which is crazy. Furthermore, I could spread the payments over 5 months, interest free. So I immediately bought it because I think prices are just going to keep rising well into 2027. I also took the opportunity to buy a pair of desk mounted monitor arms, so I could reclaim some desk space. Hence earlier today, I installed the GPU as well as the monitor arms and generally reorganised my PC environment. I also took the time to go through my IT junk cupboard and see if there was anything worth selling.

NVIDIA DLSS 5

Earlier this week, Nvidia posted a video featuring their latest iteration of DLSS technology (Deep learning super sampling). DLSS 5 is an AI-powered “real-time neural rendering” process and unlike previous versions that focused on improving frame rates through upscaling or frame generation, DLSS 5 uses generative AI to “infuse” frames with photorealistic lighting and material details that the game engine never actually calculated. Let us pause for a moment and consider these words. Material detail that the game engine never actually calculated. Therein lies the rub. If you watch the aforementioned video or peruse the images posted here, it is abundantly clear what the technology does.
