Fall Guys Matchmaking Bug

I’ve been playing Fall Guys since its launch in early 2020, during the start of the pandemic. It is a fun, family friendly multiplayer game which is has proven popular with my grandchildren. Despite the game’s acquisition by Epic, it has maintained a sufficient level of popularity that has seen it ported to all major gaming platforms. Fall Guys is free to play but like most multiplayer games, there is a season pass and an in-game store. However, these monetised aspects are not essential to enjoy the game and the overall marketing of emotes and skins is nowhere near as invasive as it is in Roblox. In fact many of the players I see while in-game have default skins, indicating a regular casual player base. However, although game seems to be maintaining its popularity, it has several bugs that appear to be be persistent. Bugs that the developers claim have been resolved. Some can be addressed by players. Other at present cannot.

There is currently an ongoing issue with matchmaking in Fall Guys that seems to be specific to the UK and Europe. When you try to join a multiplayer game, matchmaking can take up to 5 minutes or more before the requisite 32 players are found. However, Epic Games do not have any ongoing network issues listed on their server status website. This bug seems to be affecting all platforms and I have experienced it both on PC and Nintendo Switch. Furthermore, it seems to be quite widespread, judging by the various forum and subreddit posts from other Fall Guys players. However, there is a solution to the problem and it is a simple one. Go into the game settings and change to another geographical region, other than Europe. I switched to US (East). Once this was done, matchmaking completed as usual in about 20 seconds or so. I have had no problems of this kind since.

Fall Guys also has an ongoing problem with emotes that occurs on all platforms. Players can assign up to 8 emotes and access them in-game via the D-pad or keyboard. However, these will often not play when selected or there is a considerable time delay before they are. Occasionally an emote will finally trigger 30 second after it has been selected and may occur once a race has begun. This is problematic for a game where avatar customisation is a key aspect of marketing. Emotes are frequently available for sale in the in-game store and are popular among players. Also, the instability of the emote system is often exploited. Emotes have been used in the past as a means to clip through or around obstacles during races. They are also a means of travelling out of bounds which can lead to a multiplayer race crashing for all players. Hence this can be done as an act of trolling.

Players on the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 are subject to a bug specific to their platform. There is currently a problem with control lag which is happens regardless of which means of input the player uses. This affects controllers as well as keyboard and mouse, causing a delay of up to a second. It may sound negligible but in a game such a Fall Guys that is the difference between a well timed jump and losing a race. According to Reddit, players have experimented with different hardware in an attempt to bypass this bug but it seems to be an inherent software issues in this particular port of the game. Furthermore, this bug only appeared in the last twelve months, pointing to the pre Christmas 2025 update as the point of origin. Hence players on this platform will simply have to wait until developer’s Mediatonic patch the problem, as and when.
