Today we got our first look at Marc Forster’s adaptation of Max Brooks’ World War Z . It is a book that many have said is unfilmable and there have been numerous set backs during the course of the production. The script has had numerous re-writes, the release date has been put back to June 21st 2013 and the budget has increased from $125 million to $200 million. As ever, trailers can be very deceptive. World War Z certainly seems to have an epic feel with a truly global setting. However, some of the CGI effects do seem to be somewhat wanting.
However, some of the imagery is very powerful. Intelligent, fast moving zombies overwhelming everything in their path through sheer weight of numbers is quite a disturbing thought. We’ll have to wait another seven months to see whether it all works or not. In the meantime I would recommend the World War Z audio book read by the author Max Brooks and a cast featuring Alan Alda, Jürgen Prochnow, Mark Hamill and Henry Rollins. It really is a very interesting and intelligent work of fiction.
