It would appear that the viral advertising for Pacific Rim has kicked off. For those who may not be familiar with the title, Pacific Rim is Guillermo del Toro’s homage to the Japanese monster movie genre (and not something you may get up to on a drunken sojourn in Hawaii). Now I’m sure you may recollect me being somewhat outspoken about the recent trend of giant robot movies and the fact I was not exactly forgiving towards either Battleship or any of the Transformers movies. So it is perfectly reasonable to ask what makes this one so special? Well the fact that it is directed by Guillermo del Toro, for starters. He is an outstanding film maker. Therefore many of us have hopes that Pacific Rim will not only have giant robot vs aliens action but proper characters and a decent narrative.
So we have two teasers video, along with a faux document from the Great Britain Air Command and the blueprints of one of the movies Jaegers (big robot) to ponder. The main teaser is hardly original relying on the standard trope of faux news footage. Thus we get a lot of shakey-cam and interference along with brief glimpses of the Kaiju as they are attacked by jet fighters. Yet despite the excess of cliché we do get to see some very intriguing imagery. This includes the corpse of a dead Kaiju on the deck of an aircraft carrier and another attacking the docks. It’s just enough to peak ones interest. The first major trailer for Pacific Rim is to be shown with the release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in December. It’s ironic that del Toro left the production of that movie to make this one. Pacific Rim is scheduled to be released next summer on July 12th 2013 and for those interested in the cost of blockbuster movies, has a $200 million price-tag.
