The less said about Sylvester Stallone’s 1995 adaptation of the iconic British comic Judge Dredd the better. Fans did not like it and it failed to do justice to the source material. So naturally, when a reboot was announced expectations were raised. However, this new production directed by British TV and film maker Pete Travis and written by novelist and screenwriter Alex Garland has not been without its controversies. Firstly when the first production stills were released showing actor Karl Urban in his full Dredd outfit, the purists started to get picky. Apparently Dredd should be clean shaven and there were other alleged costume transgressions. More importantly, there were rumours of post production issues with director Travis being excluded from the editing process.
It was not until this year at the Cannes Film Festival did people get to see a screening of Dredd. Unfortunately it was for distributors and investors only. However the word was that the film had a distinct visual style and was “edgy” and “cool”. One source described it as “Dirty Harry meets District 9″, which is an interesting comparison. Audiences will have to wait until autumn to find out. Its UK release date is currently marked down for 7th September, and it arrives in the US on 21st September. According to the IMDB Dredd has been rated by the MPAA and has a R rating. In the meantime, checkout the trailer and see what you think.

The Stallone version was so awesome in how cheesy it was though! It will be hard to compete with that.
